Stash Bee Finishes - Spiderweb Quilt

Hi Peeps!

I have a finish, well lets say a BOUND and finished, because we all know it's been quilted for quite some time....I know you're not judging LOL

The blog history tells me this quilt is from April 2015 but if you read the post the idea is from 2011!!!

Tutorial is by Elizabeth Hartman and uses an interesting foundation piecing technique where you leave the foundation fabric attached.

Which leads me to the backing change......originally I'd chosen a candlewick bedspread ( my fave ) but with all those seams and the foundation fabric as well some intersections had 12 seams!!

My lovely longarmer tried more than once but it was not worth her sanity in broken needles!!

This vintage sheet fit the bill perfectly ( and smoother ) and Sandra and I remain friends LOL

I love that the girls of Stash Bee 2015 Hive #6 all contributed a piece of their stash to it, otherwise I'm sure it would've sat in the archived WIP pile LOL

 

Michael Miller stripe for the binding....FYI made my eyes wonky when trying to cut it up...getting old!!

Stash Bee Finish - Get Your Glasses Out!

I'm just going to make your eyes bleed from colour blindness....you're welcome..mwahahaha

The quilt is part me and part Stash Bee Hive #6 2016, thankyou girls I absolutely love it!!

 With all that headache inducing colour on the front I chose a black and white square print for the back

 Sandra from Wise Owl Quilting used a really cool variegated thread in a geometric interlocking rectangular all over panto....say that sentence really fast!!!

Last of my Summer anenomes look great against a squished up quilt.....off to the spa now with a gazillion colour catchers.

Stash Bee April - I'm Queen Bee!

Hi my Little Worker Bees it's Rebecca here aka OneWeeBird...your April Queen Bee!

Just a very quick Bio for those of you who are unfamiliar with me LOL

I am a 40 something Mum of 3 Boys 21, almost 17 and 15, and an energetic wee girl who will be 3 this June.

I have been quilting for about 13 years on and off but have really only immersed myself   (read "bought ALL the fabric") in the last few years since the Modern fabric movement consumed my soul!

This is my second year in Stash Bee and I LOOOOOVE it!!

My block for you has actually changed from my first plan as I really wanted to follow Genevieve's lead and get you guys to help me finish a WIP instead of starting a NEW one.

Introducing my Spiderweb blocks circa 2011.....ridiculous!!

I made 28 blocks and they have just sat and sat and sat....so please help me finish them and make a gorgeous quilt!

28 Blocks DOES NOT A QUILT MAKE!!!

I have not re written the Tutorial as it is already concisely and clearly written BUT I HAVE CHANGED THE DIMENSIONS

My block is 10" finished so you will start with an 11 1/4" Square.

Use any White Fabric you have on hand, as white as possible would be great not cream or ivory please, but it doesn't have to be a particular brand.

Fill your boots when it comes to the strings...the brighter the better! Raid your scrap bin!

I'm Sharing The Crazy - Queen OWB is Over at Stash Bee

Hi Guys!

Just letting you know that I'm sharing the crazy that is OWB over at Stash Bee today!

I'm not sure the Stash Bee girls know how hard it was to tone down the randomness that pops into my head!!

 I had big elaborate plans for my month as Queen but in the end decided that simple is best!

Think about signing up for next year my lovely Peeps, it really is a fun Bee and I'd love to hang around with you guys some more and make some stuff for you!

Sunday - No New Stash

Holla  My Friends!! How are we all this week??

Can you believe it no new fabric again this week....I know something is very wrong with the Universe??

But I did get some sewing done...Yay...after I had a wee freak out that my Possum Magic border #2 was due to be posted and I wasn't finished... Thankfully I have Wendy who is all things sane and she emailed to say it's not until the 29th!! Seriously how do I get dressed in the morning??

Alice's first border is just gorgeous and soft, and she included some very special fabric in the hexagons...I'll say it again, Quilty people are the best!!

Once I got over the heart palpitations of being late I resisted the urge to start a new Quilt......aaaaaaanndd did my Bee Blocks instead. Such a good Girl.

The Compass Quilters Queen Bee for September is Nesta and she requested some cross stitch blocks using this tutorial, in Orange, Pink and Lemon. Some of my favourite Sherbety colours!

I may have gone a little overboard in the cutting department, but since Nesta lives in Italy ( I know so exotic...swoon ) fabric is a bit of a nightmare to source. So I don't think she'll mind the extras

Tell me ...Is it just me? Everytime it seems I make a block for someone else I am suddenly overcome with the need want to have a quilt of my own using the same block?? What is up with that??!!

 For Stash Bee September's Queen is Diana and she chose this paper pieced fish.Once again if I had read all the instructions first I would have had these whizzed up in a jiffy.Diane sent the background fabric already cut and I was at a loss to one of the shapes not fitting the required space.....But once I read the instructions people!! Diane had sent the squares for the particular number in question...they were NOT spares as I had thought....sheesh

I don't know where she gets this type of behaviour from...really who's her mother!

Sunday Stash # 13 - The Strays

Hi My Lovelies!

I have been trying to round up the strays this weekend and get some order cleared in the nether regions....NO not those ones...the downstairs, where lurks my poor neglected stash and sewing machine, aka Lady Muck.

I kinda succeeded

 

3 blocks isn't too bad is it for a whole lot of fluffing around?? And I didn't even get to make enough time to show you the teeny tiny houses I've had forever AND some of the blocks that have been arriving for my month as Queen Bee for Compass Quilters.

 These are my two blocks for Stash Bee.This month's queen was Kathy who graciously stepped in for another as life got in the way...as it does! 

This quilt is for her little girl and all that was required was books on a shelf with selvedges as titles....sooooooo much fun was had hunting through my selvedges that the books were done OVER a week ago and I've only just sewn the titles on today

WTF??...anywhoo going in the mail tomorrow!!

Alison@little bunny quilts is taking over as Hive coordinator and I can't recommend this Bee enough.

I am having an absolute blast and have had a great introduction to my first Bee.

This is a test block for one of the ideas I have for Carla's Quilt in possum Magic so far I'm very happy with it...time is the evil here...I have ten days to make alot of little blocks...

Stuff Done - Bee Houses & Teeny Houses

Here are my teeny tiny houses for the International Patchwork House Block Swap, organised by Angie of Gnome Angel and here is the Flickr Group.

It's run through SwapBot which is quite nifty and something I'd never heard of before, but it's been fun and really mental piecing such teeny bits....many, many, many bad words were said

But I did learn something interesting about myself?

Hi my name is Rebecca and I struggle with Improv Sewing, I have not been able to just go with the flow since I first started quilting and when I have to do Improv for Stash Bee etc I freak out and try to figure out a non pattern or plan in my head.

It's really hampered my ability to hang with the cool Improv crowd cause I really really like it but I'm a secret planner and need a little direction just so I can then veer off course and feel like a rebel.

BUT

I CAN IMPROV TEENY HOUSES???

Don't ask me what the method  is in the madness of  being able to just "wing it" when it comes to doors that are 1/2" x 5/8", but I could not follow Angie's example. I just cut and sewed little bits until a house appeared

The fabric choices and fussy cuts took waaaayyy longer than the actual sewing

And I ridiculously thought in my head the house couldn't be taller than the gnome, but his head is never going to fit through that door

And of course a rabbit lives here....

Some of the houses are 2 1/2" wide...crazy...a whole quilt of these blocks would be insanely cute

Not enough room for all 3 ducks sothe two I cut off  were left to fend for themselves

Once again I used this tutorial for easy drawstring bags to pop the blocks and some goodies into

 I really need to sit down and make a few of these to have on hand, great for using up fabrics you still love but have a selvedge date of 2008??? and 2009?...come on who am I saving these fabrics for???

These blocks below are for Tina who is July's Queen Bee for Stash Bee.

Tina sent out all her fabric for her worker Bees and requested this House Block, mine was a little slow in arriving Down Under so I improvised the first two blocks, using the only??? AMH fabric I had..

I had no idea that I'm not a Anna Maria Horner admirer, I really thought I was but I only had one fabric....that I could find.... in my stash

When Tina's fabric did arrive I unpicked a roof and added her fabric choice in from a left over scrap, I could've done more but as I was sewing late at night I screwed up the cutting and didn't have enough to use one cohesive scrap....grrrrr

Hopefully I captured the saturation of colour enough with the other two to make up for only one block of her fabric choice?
