Clementine Quilt A Long - Month #1 Watermelon Wheel

Hi Peeps!

Welcome to the first month of the Clementine Quilt Along hosted by Fat Quarter Shop which will be benefiting St Jude Childrens Research Hospital.

The QAL will run from January until July and on the 25th of each month a new block will be posted with instructions and a video tutorial for a 12 1/2" AND a  20 1/2" block for any donation using this link here

You can purchase a kit here which includes all the fabric as per the pics.

It's Mama's Cottage by Amy Rosenthal or do what I've done which is use a mix of fabrics in colour story groups....or scrappy whatever floats your boat.

The pattern calls for 8 different colours and 3 fat quarters of each fabric...so I decided to change the 8 fabrics a little so it was still cohesive but a little more scrappy.....it's a sampler type quilt and I really struggle with the usual uniformity this means......surprise, surprise! LOL

So it's Red, Dark Pink, Light Pink, Navy, Turquoise (of course ) , Yellow, Lime Green and Salmon. Mostly Riley Blake and Thimbleblossoms Basics with some Bella Solids and a few fat quarters from my stash for interest.......Swiss Dot in pink for the background.

So basically you make the same block in two sizes, as per the pattern using all the same fabrics, but for mine same colour story but all different fabrics....I hope my vision works??

The Watermelon Wheel... which I've never heard of .....is a great scrap block. The smaller sub units of 6 1/2" make use of small pieces so a good scrap buster.

Be warned though although not technically difficult it's a good test of your 1/4" seam when it comes time to match all the points up....aaaggghh

I'm sewing along with the all the awesome peeps below, so check all the lovely blocks out and jump right in....it's a feel good thing and you can play with fabric...win! win!

January's Flying By - Finished Flimsy's

So it's finally happened...I'm on the last weekend of my holiday...aaaagh!

I took an extra week this year due to Little OWB being in school and their term doesn't start until February!!!.....man I wish I was 5 again!!

But nonetheless it has zoomed by, I do not remotely feel ready to get back to the working week...... how am I going to get both of us out the door on time for a start???

Boohoo say those of you who have been working already for the last couple of weeks LOL...so let's suck it up buttercup and get to the fabric :)

I have been slowly...read very slowly...trying to sort and tidy my sewing room.
While going through some patterns and random pieces of paper with scribbles on them? I found a magazine page I'd ripped out with a pattern on it that combined an 8 pointed star block with another...cue the Annabel Wrigley Daisy Chain pile and then I was off! Tidying can always wait LOL

Initially I wanted to mix the prints within the star, but it was late at night and I just wasn't feeling it

Trust me the fabrics are a lot crisper in real life, these are all night shots...sorry.....anyway my answer is always to sleep on it and in the morning I decided to keep the prints together and then I "felt" it.

I'm thrilled with the result and love the shabby chic feel of the gorgeous prints on the Riley Blake Le Creme Dot background....anyone know where I can get some more black dot on cream?? Fat Quarter Shop are all sold out

This little print is my favourite I think

Aaaaand because I started something new and finished it in a few days, I made myself finish a languishing WIP as well....feeling smug LOL

It only had a little to go and had stalled because I fell outta love with the colour combo and was unsure about the crossweave blue background

But I love it again and it's such a sweet little quilt that I think will look gorgeous quilted in a matching blue thread....it's good to move outside your colour comfort zone sometimes.

Pattern link is here

So although not completely finished into quilts...yet...I'm feeling pretty productive..yaaay me..does this counteract all the laying about I've done??...which now seems to be not nearly enough!!

Talk soon Peeps ( waving goodbye )

Happy New Year - Double Nine Patch QAL

Happy New Year My Peeps!

As per usual I never saw the NY in...had too many children over the years and I'm extremely covetous of my sleep hours, not to mention a hangover with even just one kid is heinous!!!

I have got a quilt top finished and ready to quilt for the New Year tho...yay me!
It is part of the Classic & Vintage series from The Fat Quarter Shop and is the Double 9 Patch

Since I had a lot of precut strips left over from this quilt I thought I'd go scrappy and try and use them up....which was great until I'd finished half a dozen blocks and realised that the spacer blocks were going to require 81 teeny tiny low volume squares...EACH!

SO MANY SQUARES!

I didn't want to give up and I definitely didn't want to lose the darker pink/red chain that although difficult to see ( still working on my contrast :/ ) in one block was showing up nicely in the bigger picture.

So I came up with the Puss in the Corner block and pieced it Courthouse step style, with a nine patch centre.....made too many as per usual LOL

I looove the end result

I would really like to hand quilt it and keep the vintage shabby look going but realistically I know that means vanquishing it to the hopefully I'll get it done pile....so I'm determined to get the backing sorted and do my "go to" cross hatch machine quilting on it....I think it will crinkle up beautifully with that dense quilting.

It turned out to be a bit of a labour of love with so much piecing and my scrap bin of pink/red and LV doesn't even look like it's been touched...but thats what quilting is all about hahaha

Talk soon peeps x
